This set includes 3 DVDs: Alone in the Wilderness, Shackleton’s Antarctic Adventure and Touching the Void. Alone in the Wilderness DVD: Alone in the Wilderness is the documentry of Richard Proenneke, the subject of the book One Man's Wilderness: an Alaskan Odyssey . Richard Proenneke built his own cabin in the wilderness near Twin Lakes, in what is now Lake Clark National Park & Preserve. Richard Proenneke lived the dream of building a cabin in the Alaskan wilderness, and stayed to become a part of the country. This program is a simple account of the day-to-day explorations and activities he carried out alone, and the constant chain of nature's events that kept him company. Shackleton’s Antarctic Adventure: Shackleton’s Antarctic Adventure recounts the extraordinary true story of polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton’s 1914-1916 British Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, which many consider "the greatest survival story of all time." This expedition has become a testament to heroism and human endurance, with all 28 men surviving nearly two years in the barren, frigid Antarctic when their ship, the Endurance, was caught in pack ice and eventually crushed. The giant-screen film features stunning Antarctic images and re-creations filmed in 1999 and 2000, plus the remarkable original still photography and 35mm motion-picture footage of Frank Hurley, the official photographer for the Endurance expedition. Narrated by Kevin Spacey. Directed by George Butler; Produced by Susanne Simpson, Scott Swofford and George Butler; Executive Producer, Susanne Simpson; Executive-in-Charge, Paula S. Apsell. This DVD includes film quiz, and French and Spanish narration. Touching the Void: In 1985, two British mountaineers, Joe Simpson and Simon Yates, embarked on a daring--arguably reckless in the extreme--attempt to climb the previously unconquered mountain Siula Grande. A mixture of overconfidence in their own abilities and underestimation of the climb's difficulties brought them to grief after the successful slog to the summit. What follows is an often harrowing account of their perilous descent.
