Scollay Square, The Boston Braves, Revere Beach, the Cocoanut Grove, the Totem Pole Ballroom—these are the things that made Boston the way it was. Based on the Emmy Award-winning public TV shows, this portrait of Boston in the '30s and '40s features over 160 rare archival photos and reminiscences from Bostonians who were there to tell a story about a unique time and place.

In 1930, the Customs House Tower was the tallest building in Boston. For five cents you could get a hot dog at Joe & Nemo's, and for a quarter you could rent a bathing suit for an hour at Revere Beach. The ice man and the knife and scissors sharpener would stop at your door. And you knew everybody in the neighborhood, and they knew you. Photos from the Leslie Jones Collection of the Boston Public Library, street photographer Jules Aarons, and many others fill this book with memories of the city during one of its richest and most vital era. Author Lorie Conway is the producer of the Boston: The Way It Was TV programs. The foreword is by Boston Irish author and Boston College professor of history Thomas O'Connor.
